How to Make Rainbow Bread
- Proof Yeast: Combine warm water and a bit of sugar. Sprinkle yeast, cover, and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a stand mixer, combine remaining sugar, salt, and 3 cups of flour.
- Combine Mixtures: Stir oil into yeast mixture, then pour into flour mixture. Beat until smooth, gradually add more flour.
- Divide Dough: Transfer dough to floured surface and divide into 4 or 6 equal portions.
- Color Dough: Knead gel food coloring into each portion, covering others to prevent drying.
- First Rise: Place colored dough pieces in warm spot and let them rise until doubled in size, about 1.5 to 2 hours.
- Shape Loaf: Flatten colored dough pieces, layer them, and roll tightly into a loaf shape.
- Second Rise: Grease loaf pans, place loaves inside, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
- Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F and bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding.
- Cool: Remove bread from pans and let cool on wire racks. Slice once fully cooled.
