Method

How to Make Dauphinoise Potatoes
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and butter a 9x13-inch baking dish generously.
  2. Grate approximately 8 ounces of Gruyère cheese.
  3. Peel and slice your Yukon Gold potatoes into 1/4-inch rounds.
  4. In a large pot, combine sliced potatoes with minced garlic, heavy cream, whole milk, kosher salt, black pepper, nutmeg, and dried bay leaves. Bring to a gentle simmer for about 5-7 minutes until slightly tender, then discard bay leaves.
  5. Spoon half of the potato mixture into your prepared baking dish, then sprinkle half of the grated Gruyère on top. Repeat with the remaining mixture and finish with the last of the cheese.
  6. Pour the remaining creamy mixture over the potatoes, ensuring it covers them just below the top layer of cheese.
  7. Place the dish in your preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and fork-tender.
  8. Garnish with fresh thyme and allow to cool for 15 minutes before serving.
