  • 8 slices bread can swap for whole grain or gluten-free
  • 8 slices ham cooked bacon can be used
  • 1.5 cups shredded Swiss cheese consider Cheddar or Gruyere
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1.5 cups milk almond milk for dairy-free
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup can replace with honey
  • 1 teaspoon mustard Dijon or yellow mustard works great
  • salt and pepper to taste

Method
 

How to Make Monte Cristo Breakfast Casserole
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
  2. Cut the bread into cubes and layer half of them at the bottom of your prepared baking dish.
  3. Layer the sliced ham on top of the bread, followed by half of the shredded Swiss cheese.
  4. Whisk together the eggs, milk, maple syrup, mustard, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  5. Pour half of the egg mixture evenly over the first layers of bread, ham, and cheese.
  6. Repeat layering with the remaining bread, ham, and cheese. Pour the rest of the egg mixture on top.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
