Preparation Steps
- Start by following the package instructions on your cake mix, mixing until smooth—about 2-3 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners and fill each liner about 2/3 full. Bake for 15-20 minutes.
- Remove the cupcakes from the oven and allow to cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
- In a mixing bowl, beat 1 cup of softened unsalted butter until creamy and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
- Gradually mix in 4 cups of sifted powdered sugar until well combined and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
- Add 1/4 cup of heavy whipping cream and 1 teaspoon of clear vanilla flavoring, mixing until smooth and creamy, about 2 more minutes.
- Divide the frosting into separate bowls and add drops of food coloring gel to each. Stir to achieve desired colors.
- Frost the cooled cupcakes with your colorful buttercream using a piping bag or spatula.
