Preparation Steps
  1. Start by following the package instructions on your cake mix, mixing until smooth—about 2-3 minutes.
  2. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners and fill each liner about 2/3 full. Bake for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Remove the cupcakes from the oven and allow to cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  4. In a mixing bowl, beat 1 cup of softened unsalted butter until creamy and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Gradually mix in 4 cups of sifted powdered sugar until well combined and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  6. Add 1/4 cup of heavy whipping cream and 1 teaspoon of clear vanilla flavoring, mixing until smooth and creamy, about 2 more minutes.
  7. Divide the frosting into separate bowls and add drops of food coloring gel to each. Stir to achieve desired colors.
  8. Frost the cooled cupcakes with your colorful buttercream using a piping bag or spatula.
