How to Make
- Prepare Apples: Carefully cut the apples in half, core them, peel off the skin, and carve out funny faces. Let your creativity shine; this is where the fun begins!
- Prevent Browning: Combine citric acid or lemon juice with water. Immerse your carved apple halves into this mixture for a few minutes, then gently pat them dry to keep them looking fresh.
- Bake Apples: Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C). Place the carved apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for about 3 hours. They should start to shrivel; then, cool for 2-3 hours until they're soft inside.
- Prepare Tart Shell: Raise the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C). Line a tart pan with your pie crust, prick the bottom with a fork, and bake it for 10 minutes until slightly golden.
- Fill Tart: Arrange your shrunken apple heads inside the tart shell. Fill the empty spaces around them with a mixture of chopped walnuts, dried cranberries, honey, and orange juice (and cinnamon if desired). Baste each apple with syrup from the mixture to enhance flavor.
- Final Bake: Bake the filled tart for 15-17 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Once done, let it cool before serving to let those yummy flavors settle!
