  • 2 large Onions sliced
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced
  • 1 tsp Dried Thyme
For the Topping
  • 1 cup Gruyère or Swiss Cheese or mozzarella for a milder flavor
  • 2 tbsp Butter or olive oil for caramelizing
  • 1/2 cup Beef Broth or vegetable broth for vegetarian option

Method
 

How to Make French Onion Meatloaf
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Caramelize the onions by melting butter in a skillet over medium heat. Cook sliced onions for 20-25 minutes until golden brown, stirring occasionally. Deglaze with beef broth and set aside to cool.
  3. Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, minced garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, thyme, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Mix gently until just combined.
  4. Fold in cooled caramelized onions and half of the Gruyère cheese into the meat mixture.
  5. Shape the mixture into a loaf and place it in a greased baking dish.
  6. Bake for 1 hour or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C).
  7. Top with remaining cheese and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until melted.
  8. Rest the meatloaf for 10 minutes before slicing.
