  • 1 medium onion yellow or white onion preferred
  • 1-2 jalapeños adjust based on spice preference
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 4 cups low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth
  • 15 oz plain tomato sauce can substitute with enchilada sauce
  • ¼ cup salsa verde can swap with red salsa
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 2 tbsp cumin
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper omit for a milder soup
For the Garnish
  • 1 lime halved
  • cup fresh cilantro or to taste

  • tortilla chips/strips
  • sliced jalapeño peppers
  • shredded cabbage
  • spicy crushed red pepper flakes
  • lime wedges

How to Make Spicy Shrimp Tortilla Soup
  1. Thaw and peel the shrimp if necessary.
  2. In a large pot, heat avocado oil over medium heat. Sauté the diced onion and jalapeño until they’re tender and aromatic, then add the minced garlic.
  3. Stir in the broth, tomato sauce, salsa verde, chili powder, cumin, and sea salt. Bring to a gentle boil.
  4. Add the shrimp and simmer until cooked.
  5. Stir in fresh lime juice and cilantro. Adjust seasoning if necessary.
  6. Ladle into bowls and top with tortilla chips and any other garnishes.
