Ingredients

For the Gravy
  • 1 pound Breakfast Sausage Substitute with turkey sausage for a leaner option.
  • 1/3 cup All-Purpose Flour For gluten-free, use a 1:1 gluten-free baking flour.
  • 2 cups Milk Substitute with unsweetened almond milk or oat milk for dairy-free versions.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Adjust to personal taste.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper Use freshly cracked for better flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder Optional, adds depth to the gravy.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper Flakes Optional, adds heat; omit if desired.
For the Biscuit Layer
  • 1 can Refrigerated Biscuit Dough Homemade biscuits can also be used for an elevated texture.
For the Topping
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese Substitute with Monterey Jack or Gouda.
  • 1/4 cup Fresh Parsley or Chives Optional, for garnish and added freshness.

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • skillet
  • whisk

Method

Steps
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and crumbled, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the cooked sausage and stir for 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the milk and cook until thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and optional red pepper flakes.
  4. Cut the refrigerated biscuit dough into halves or quarters.
  5. Spread half of the biscuit pieces in the greased dish, pour half of the sausage gravy over, layer remaining biscuits on top, followed by the rest of the gravy. Sprinkle shredded cheese over.
  6. Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes until biscuits are golden brown and casserole is bubbly. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
  7. Optional: Garnish with fresh parsley or chives before serving.

Notes

For best results, use cold butter in your biscuits, and handle the biscuit dough gently. Consider adding diced vegetables or substituting the sausage for a vegetarian option.
